Sand and Study

Yo!

It's the end of another week. Had quite a bit of uni work to do this week, so just updating now!

I said in my last blog that I would spend MLK jr Day relaxing and doing nothing, but this is Hawaii, and it's hard to do nothing!
So I went with Georgia, Yohan, Sam and Keith on a drive up to the North Shore.
We drove past heaps of Macadamia farms and pineapple plantations - pineapples look so weird when they grow, they just kinda randomly pop out from shrubs.

So we went to Foodland and stocked up on snacks, then went to Pipeline to watch the pros surf.

Our beach picnic, consisting of cheesecake, donettes (not donuts?) and donut holes:

Probably not the best beach food, but it was so delicious.

Some surfers waiting for a wave:

Surfers actually riding a wave:

Chilled out there for a bit, didn't see Kelly Slater so we went in search for our next beach!

On the way, we stopped at a place where everyone was jumping off a cliff/rock bit.

It's actually the rock that Mila Kunis and Jason Segel jump off in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

The guys sussing out the jump:

Yohan jumping off:

Then I decided to jump off.

It was super fun! There was even a pufferfish in the water. But we stayed away from that. It was actually having the best time, doing little flips and stuff.

Our next beach was Lanikai, which was super pretty and was really nice to swim in:

After swimming and sunbathing, the sun was starting to set, so we head back and called it a day.
It was a great day.

Tuesday was all classes, did another spin session and worked up a mean sweat.
Which mean that we deserved... Tacos!
It was Taco Tuesday after all.

So we rode mopeds down (I got on the back of one) to Serg's Kitchen for some yummy tacos and a fiesta.

Then moped'ed back home.
Went to bed feeling very satisfied with my tacos.

Wednesday I had swimming and weight training (still chuckle when I say I'm doing weights) in the morning.
Went to Kahala Mall which was a pretty chill mall, it smelled like popcorn.

This place looked kinda cool and kinda creepy at the same time:

They had non-creepy shops too, like some cool surf shops where I bought a rash top:

And some thongs coz I lost mine at kayaking:

V. comfy thongs.

Went to Wholefoods just to have a look, but ended up doing my whole grocery shopping there because it was so so amazing. They had so much!!
I stocked up on heaps of stuff.

Made a burger for tea, with bread instead of burger buns because I'm an improviser.

Also got some chocolate made from local cacao beans.
It was crazy creamy and delicious.

The rest of my night was spent doing assignments and stuff coz I'd been at Wholefoods for too long lol. But pineapple lumps helped me through it.

Thursday was classes again, gave my lil presentation in bioinformatics and everyone loved it because of my accent.
And because I'm the bomb at giving presentations.

I saw this super fluffy dog on campus but I didn't get a very good picture of it:

I don't know what it was, but it was so fluffyyyyyyyyyy!

I went to the UH store and bought a couple of things to show my University of Hawaii pride:

That backpack is the bomb. It's quite small, but it can fit HEAPS in it. It's like the Mary Poppins bag.

After classes, Georgia and I went to another spin class (full of booty-related music) and then to an international evening with unlimited pizza.
So that was a good time.
But a bunch of us left there (after pizza) for the Tropics Bar and just hung out there for a while, which was really cool.

Came home and went straight to sleep!

Fridays I have no classes so I slept in!!
Went to the market an got a few veggies and some bread and stuff.

Put on a load of washing, using up my cool quarters.
Each of them was from a different state:

Then Georgia and I went to a core class to work on our rock hard abs.
After that we treated ourselves with Snow Ice, which is like shave ice but it's with ice cream!

Got a cool spoon to eat it with:

These were our monster mountains of snow ice:

Sooooo good. It just crumbles off and melts in your mouth.
Mine was Haupia (left) which is coconut & chocolate and Georgia's was dark chocolate and peppermint (right).

Then I had dinner and I've just been chillin' and Skypin' !

Ready for the weekend.

Mahalo for reading!

Beaches for Days

Hellooooooo!

I feel like I've done quite a lot in the last few days - and I've got lots of photos! So I thought I should do a post before I crash out.

Sooooo.. on Friday I had some delish Hawaiian Avo on toast for brekkie:

My plan was just to go to Ross' and Walmart to grab a few items, but after I visited those places, I somehow ended up in the Ala Moana Mall...

Went into a few stores, including Levi's... I tried on some really cool shorts so I might go back and get those. A bit pricey but I'm worth it.

Caught a bus to uni and attended another sorta welcome event. That was pretty cool, heaps of cookies :D

Then I came back to the YMCA where there was a little luau going on. Met heaps of new people from the YMCA, talked with them for a while, and had yummy food too.

Nekk day, I got up early for surfing! We drove to Diamond Head and had a bit of a surfing-briefing, then we were in the water, paddling out to catch some waves!

It was soooooo fun! At first I just kinda lay down when I caught waves, then I got up on my knees, and then I stood up!
Not for very long, but I stood up.
And it felt awesome.

Kelly Slater's in town at the moment, maybe he'll see me and ask me to surf with him.

One of the times I fell off I kicked the reef and cut my foot a little bit. And I know you wanna see my nasty foot, so here it is!

I hope coral doesn't start growing in my foot..

Came home, was on a bit of a surfing buzz, and had some lunch.
Then Richard, Georgia (both NZers), Marco (Georgia's flatmate) and I went to Waikiki for a bit of a chill and a swim.
So yeah, we chilled and swam.
Met some local Hawaiians who were really cool, said they'd give us super good rates on surfboard hiring and lessons. :)

Hehehehe I couldn't see what I was taking a picture of, I thought I was taking a picture of the beach but I took this really beautiful pic of my face by mistake:

I lol'd when I saw it later.

Me and a surfboard:

Next, we were on a mission for ice cream.
A couple of people stopped us to offer us deals at different nightclubs, but ice cream on the beach is a way better way to spend your Saturday night.

So we ended up wandering through the Hilton:

And found this amaaaazing ice cream place called Lappert's.

We all got the option "Couldn't Decide" which was a waffle basket with five scoops of ice cream in it.

I can't even remember all the flavours, but they were all sooooooo gooooood.
There was like, peanut butter cup fudge, white chic macadamia, Kona Coffee macadamia, dark chocolate macadamia, coconut macadamia, green tea, all sorts!
These are a couple of the flavours I got:

  • Heavenly Hana - Creamy chocolate ice cream with delicate swirls of marshmallow ribboned throughout with our handmade chunks of white chocolate covered macadamia nuts, dark chocolate almond chunks, chocolate bits & roasted almonds.

  • Kauai Pie - Kona coffee ice cream swirled with chocolate fudge, coconut flakes, macadamia nuts and vanilla cake crunch

O.M.G.

We wandered around the Hilton for a bit, and could've swum in the pool if we wanted, no one would have stopped us!
Might go there next time for a swim.

Me and a palm tree:

There was a wedding on the beach too which was so cool!

Sun starting to set:

We found a good possie on some rocks to watch the sunset. It was a bit cloudy down the bottom but it was still really pretty.

Even prettier:

Then we slowly made our way back.
At night, everything is lit with tiki torches! It's awesome.

Stopped into the Honolulu Cookie Company as well. They let you sample all their cookies! They were dee.licious.

Caught the bus home and was knackered as!
Had a good sleep, recharging for the next morning's adventures.

Sunday morning: kayaking!

One of the instructors didn't come, so we couldn't go to where we had planned to go, but we went to another place called Chinaman's Hat.

Mountains on the drive there:

And this is why it's called Chinaman's Hat:

Pre-kayaking-lifejacket-safety selfie:

Some of these pics may be a bit blurry coz I had my phone in a waterproof case.

Trying on the Chinaman's Hat:

It was such a perfect day. Clear skies and no wind.

The water was super clear too.
We went for a swimming and explored the cool rock pools and stuff.

The cove we came through:

These are the actual mountains you see in Jurassic Park as they're coming up to the island:

And this is my shadow:

Me and Jurassic Park:

Rock pools and stuff:

A super artistic shot of me looking across the ocean, thinking about life:

More rockpools lol:

A lonely palm tree on the island:

Yeah! So we made the journey back to the beach, them back home.

Had dinner with Yuki and some others, they cooked up a BBQ.
We all just hung out in the common area and talked.
We were comparing what different languages say for different animal noises. Like, in Japanese, instead of "woof woof" for a dog, they say "wan wan". And in Korean, they say "mong mong".
And other crazy stuff.

SOoOooo ready for bed now.

Think I might just have a chill day tomorrow, paying respects to Martin Luther King Jr.
Have quite a bit of homework to do.
Haha I forgot that I'm actually here to study..

But it'll be good to have a nice relaxed day.

Peace out!
